The Jiangsu Provincial Government of Health and Wuxi No.3 People’s Hospital organised an International Knowledge Exchange conference of SDAF-SARS. This conference was successfully held in Wuxi, China on 12th September 2010 with the main objective of discussing bladder management after SCI.
The conference organisers invited Neurology, Urology and Orthopaedic doctors as well as other medical professionals such as Dr. Domurath, a Neurology-Urology expert from Werner Wicker Hospital, Germany, Dr. Liao Liming from China Rehabilitation Centre in Beijing and Dr. Zhou Mouwang from Peking University Third Hospital.

At the conference, the doctors and medical professionals exchanged knowledge and experience and discussed rehabilitation for SCI patients. Rehabilitation and treatments for patients after SCI is still a challenging problem for many countries. In China, there are many SCI patients who find it difficult to control their bladders which in most cases cause UTIs but can also lead to more serious conditions such as kidney damage, or urinary stones. As statistic shows, uremia is one of the main problems that threaten Chinese SCI patients.

Dr. Domurath speaking at the conference about SARS

Professor Giles Brindley invented The Brindley Bladder Control System in 1972. (The system is also known as SARS). The devices main objective is to restore bladder function after SCI. It can also aid in bowel evacuation and in some men can promote penile erection. About 90% of all patients with this implant use it for voiding and the majority have seen a significant decrease in infection rates and improvements in continence. SARS is strongly recommended as a highly reliable system and permanent solution to the bladder and bowel problem in complete SCI patients by the European urology-neurology community.

Using SARS as a treatment for complete SCI patients to fully empty bladders is within the early phases in Chinese marketplace. So far, there have been 9 SARS operations, all of which have been done successfully in Shanghai, Beijing. For this international knowledge exchange program of SDAF-SARS, Dr. Domurath from Werner Wicker Hospital, Germany and Dr. Xu Ruisheng from Wuxi No.3 People’s Hospital collaborated to implant a SARS system into a 49 years old Chinese lady. The collaboration between Dr. Domurath and Dr Xu not only shows the great techniques of implanting SARS to patients, but also promotes this treatment to the academic fields in China. In the next 5 to 10 years, Chinese doctors and surgeons will particularly focus on rehabilitations for SCI patients, building up awareness of the SDAF-SARS treatment, and share experience with other medical professionals worldwide.
