Foot Drop Management, Post Stroke

The STIMuSTEP system is a highly recommended treatment that helps correct dropped foot in chronic stroke patients. Since the product was entered into the market in 2004, many patients worldwide (mainly within Europe) are benefiting from it.

The use of FES to treat Foot Drop is N.I.C.E (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) recognised, following the Interventional Procedure Guidance 278.

About STIMuSTEP

Finetech Medical’s STIMuSTEP® implanted dropped foot stimulator is an inductively powered neuroprosthesis, which consists of both implanted and external components. STIMuSTEP delivers low levels of electrical stimulation to two branches of the common peroneal nerve in patients with a chronic upper motor neurone neurological deficit; typically experienced following stroke.  Power and control signals for the implant are passed through the skin using a radio frequency inductively coupled link and the stimulation is timed to the gait cycle using a footswitch placed in the user's shoe.  When the nerve is stimulated it causes the muscle to contract as if the brain has sent the signal itself.

The STIMuSTEP System consists of the following:

  • The Implanted Stimulator is a solely passive device composed of a receiver body, connecting cables and two electrode arrays.
  • The External Components include the Controller, leg strap, a footswitch and battery charger.

How it works?

The STIMuSTEP System uses Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) to stimulate the nerves which help correct dropped foot. The external Controller (A) is positioned over the site of the Implant Receiver (D) using the Leg Strap (B).  The Footswitch (C) is placed under the heel of the foot inside the shoe and plugged into the Controller.

While the Controller is switched on:How to use STIMuSTEP

1. When the heel leaves the floor, the Footswitch triggers the Controller to transmit power and control signals, through the skin, to the Implant Receiver.

2. The Implant Receiver converts the received power and control signals into electrical signals which are then sent along the Cooper Cables (E) to the Electrodes (F).

3. These signals stimulate the two branches of the common peroneal nerve causing the combination of muscles to contract appropriately, thus lifting (Dorsiflexion) and rotating (Eversion) the foot to the correct position for walking.

The Controller stops the stimulation when the Footswitch senses that the heel has struck the ground again.
