Overall objectives:
  • Develop a range of medical implants and diagnostic equipment to help the ageing population and those with disabilities.  It has been estimated that around 50% of the western population, some 500 million people, are affected by at least one of the health problems targeted in this project.
Our objectives:
  • Design, develop, test, trial and approve a novel implantable upper limb muscle stimulator
  • Manage the Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) work package
Our achievements:
  • Succesfully trialled the STIMuGRIP® system - restores control of the wrist and hand grasp action to the user following spinal cord injury, a stroke, the onset of MS or other neurological injury.
    • ideas and research
      • determining application
      • establishing control method
      • determining specification
    • research and prototyping
      • development of implant (epimysial electrode and implantable inductively coupled receiver)
      • development of external unit (controller and accelerometer trigger)
    • testing
      • suite of tests covering:
        • medical device directive
        • electrical safety standards
        • biocompatability standards
        • sterilisation standards
        • packaging
        • risk managment
    • approvals
      • ethical approval
      • clinical protocol
      • clinical trial and associated insurance
      • clinical review
  • Developed:
    • implantable epimysial electrode
      • constructed of a platinum button electrode embedded within silicone rubber
    • implantable inductively coupled receiver (stimulator)
      • 2 independent channel, inductively coupled, implant receiver
      • significantly reduced crosstalk between channels
    • epimysial surgical probe
      • surgical probe incorporating the epimysial electrodes for use when implanting the device
    • surgical stimulator
      • new stimulator design capable of both variable frequency stimulation and variable pulse width stimulation
      • improved range of stimulation parameters
    • wireless charger
      • demonstrated that wireless charging of implants with implanted lithium-ion batteries was feasible
  • Managed the Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) work package - presentations, progress reports, financial reports.
  • Managed ethical approval applications and clinical trial applications for entire project.
