Candidates for the system are individuals who have a clinically complete spinal cord injury with resulting paraplegia or quadriplegia. The following list includes some of guidelines for the device:

  • Skeletally mature (generally, aged over 18)
  • A complete spinal cord lesion. Those with incomplete lesion may experience pain when they stimulate the implant.
  • Neurologically stable
  • Intact reflex bladder contractions (this will be assessed during video-urodynamic studies of the bladder)
  • 12 months post-injury to ensure stable lesion
